If you’ve been on my list for awhile or ever heard me speak, you know that I often talk about using your passion to succeed. I always tell my students to follow their passion in their business.

Find that one thing that keeps you up at night, that wakes you up bright and early, and use it to your advantage to really get your business going.

I often have students who come to me saying “I have no passion” or “But I’m passionate about everything!” Those students end up going nowhere in their business and it can leave me feeling like I failed them.

Well guess what … I have failed them!

And finally, I figured out why … It’s because, until recently,

I HAD IT ALL WRONG !

Yep, you heard it from me first. I was NOT teaching them the RIGHT thing!

In a very lengthy discussion I had with a close personal friend recently, I realized that I had been missing something all along. That in teaching people to simply “follow their passion” I was actually doing them an injustice and, in many cases, setting them up to fail.

What should I have been teaching them?

I had it almost right before, but I was missing one key ingredient. What you’ll need to do in order to be successful in your business is:

FOLLOW YOUR PROFITABLE PASSION !

It’s that one little word “PROFITABLE” that makes all the difference in the formula.

I know, now you’re sitting there thinking, “What the heck is she talking about?” Well, let me explain it to you. I’ll even lay out a little road map for you to find your “profitable passion” if you’d like.

Your profitable passion is that one thing about you that not only keeps you from going to sleep at night, wakes you up in the wee hours of the morning, but ALSO is something that other people WANT and want badly!

Do you see the difference there?

Here’s how you can find your PROFITABLE passion. Sit down with a notebook. Make a list of the following:

1) All of those areas in which you are COMPETENT. I didn’t say an “expert” but “competent”. What I mean here is to list those things that you have a decent working knowledge of. Can you crochet but your finished product doesn’t look that great? Or maybe you get it started, love doing it, but just can’t find the time to finish it? If it’s something that you really love to do and have some COMPETENCE in, put it on the list.

2) All of those areas in which you have SKILLS. For this one, list all of those things that you know how to do. Again, you don’t need to do them well, you need a working knowledge of doing them and it must be something you absolutely love.

3) All of your RESOURCES. This would include things like money, a computer, a scanner, a saw, knitting needles, whatever tools you have that you might be able to use to make money.

4) All of your NETWORKING RESOURCES. Here you’ll want to get that rolodex out. Thing about people you know and people THEY know. That’s why I said “RESOURCES” not “contacts”. You should also list any associations or other organizations you might belong to or have access to through one of your contacts.

Once you have your four lists made, I want you to go back and look through the lists. Find that one or two things that:

a) You really get excited about,
b) That appear on EACH LIST

In other words, your PROFITABLE passion is that one thing which appears on all 4 of your lists … that you are COMPETENT in, have SKILLS in, have RESOURCES in, and have NETWORKING CONTACTS for, and that really gets you excited!

Next you need to find out whether it can make you any money. So, you’ll want to go to Amazon.com and see if there are any books on the topic. If there are, then you may have a PROFITABLE passion.

If not, then go to http://groups.yahoo.com and see if there are any Yahoo Groups about the subject. If there are, then you may have a PROFITABLE passion.

You can also try looking in http://www.wordtracker.com - use their free trial. Look up some keywords. If there are a decent number of searches on them, then you may have a PROFITABLE passion.

You’ll want to really do some brainstorming with yourself to think about the different ways that you can use that PROFITABLE passion, that can allow you to earn an income online. Think outside the box!

You can use this in your business to GET IT RIGHT! Finally, you’ll be able to succeed in business!

Can you think of ways to use this to find a niche? It should help you on your journey to entrepreneurial success.

There’s a lot more to finding a profitable target market. I’ll cover that in a later post. For now, really spend some time just thinking about that one thing that is soon to become your PROFITABLE PASSION and how you might be able to use it to make money onl the internet.

If you really want to explore this further, take a look at this fantastic package that I just found. It is all about how many people have made a “Ridiculous Income” on the internet by following their passions. Hi Gina

I love your article. It came at exactly the right time for me.

I have been doing days of niches research and having to choose what to do next. Also I have over 30 domain names with some coming up for renewal.

I took inspiration from the article and broke my list down to areas of interest. I went through the list with a kind of “Passion Test”. For each entry I asked myself, “How much do I care about this?” I wrote down a simple “score”-either None, Some or Lots!

Only those with a Lots score went into the next “round”…

Then I checked the Skills and Resources as you advise. After that I used Supply and Demand and Profitability figures for each niche.

I feel clearer than I have ever felt about my online business!

    Thank You So Much

    Alex Newell
